History and cultural importance

Built on the ancient site of Icosium, the Casbah flourished in the Ottoman era with palaces and mosques such as Ketchaoua and Dar Mustapha Pacha. It remains a living example of a Mediterranean Islamic city. Palais des Raïs witnesses the Ottoman medina’s extension towards the sea. The Citadel and Dar Essoultane reflect government and fortification heritage; restoration can restrict access.

Suggested activities

Guided walking tour of the Casbah, museums, seafront walks, cable cars to the upper districts. Choose two sites or one neighbourhood to begin, then adapt the programme around admission, transport and breaks. Out-of-town excursions need separate arrangements; links between guides prove neither distance nor travel time.

Best seasons

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are mild and pleasant. Summer is hot and humid.

Getting there and around

Houari Boumediene International Airport is the main gateway. In town: metro, tramway and taxis. Check timetables with the official operators.

Local cuisine and traditions

Chorba, Algiers-style rechta, bourek and traditional pastries such as makrout and qalb el louz.

Practical visitor advice
