History and cultural importance

The paintings record millennia of climate and life change in the Sahara, from wild fauna to cattle herding. The area is Tuareg homeland. Tassili n’Ajjer combines sandstone formations with rock art recording climatic change and human and animal life over millennia. Plan excursions around respect for this natural and cultural heritage; do not touch paintings or engravings.

Suggested activities

Multi-day accompanied 4x4 or trekking tours, desert camps, night-sky watching. Choose two sites or one neighbourhood to begin, then adapt the programme around admission, transport and breaks. Out-of-town excursions need separate arrangements; links between guides prove neither distance nor travel time.

Best seasons

October to April; summer is extremely hot.

Getting there and around

Djanet Tiska Airport. Tours inside the park run with licensed agencies and guides and the required permits. Always check schedules and fares with the official operators before travelling.

Local cuisine and traditions

Taguella bread baked in the sand and Saharan tea.

Practical visitor advice
